What makes a mobile app worth $50?

How onboarding, paywalls, progress systems, and retention mechanics change the value of a mobile product.

The question behind the talk

Knockout began as a useful boxing timer. The product worked, but usefulness alone did not explain why someone would consider paying $50 for it.

That question changed the roadmap. Instead of asking which feature to add next, I started looking at how successful mobile products create commitment, communicate value, and make progress visible.

This talk shares the practical lessons from that process: what I applied to Knockout, what is still an experiment, and what other mobile teams can test in their own products.

Key takeaways

What you will learn

  1. Start with perceived value, not feature count. See how a pricing question can expose gaps in the product experience.

  2. Use onboarding to create relevance. Connect personalization and user commitment to the experience that follows.

  3. Make the paywall explain the product. Communicate value, trust, trial expectations, and plan differences clearly.

  4. Design progress people can notice. Use levels, streaks, achievements, and progress states to make improvement visible rather than decorative.

  5. Build a reason to return. Connect each next action to a meaningful goal instead of adding engagement mechanics at random.
